Power Of Suggestion Revealed In Study Of Migraine Drug

Traffic headache

Traffic headache

Researchers from Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston compared the effects of a common migraine drug and an inactive placebo in 66 people who suffer from migraines. The condition includes throbbing headache , nausea , vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. The results consistently showed that taking the pills accompanied by positive information increased the effectiveness of the treatment, whether the patient had taken the real deal — the drug Maxalt — or a pill labeled “placebo.” Headache specialist Dr. Andrew Charles said the study demonstrates that expectation about response plays an important role in the ultimate response to a treatment. “When migraine patients were told by their doctor that a pill would help ease their headaches, this advice seemed to produce results whether or not the pill was a real migraine medication or a dummy placebo,” said Charles, professor and director of the headache research and treatment program in the department of neurology at University of California School of Medicine, Los Angeles. “Relief was still higher with the actual medicine, so drugs do work beyond the placebo effect, but the researchers say that the placebo effect may still account for half of the therapeutic value of a drug,” said Charles, who was not involved in the research.

According to officials at the scene, a driver with Capital Structures of Fort Smith drove past the St. Francis County Courthouse looking for a way back onto Washington. The truck was hauling pre-made roofing joists. As the trucker attempted to turn right onto Cross Street, some of the load struck a utility pole at the corner, forcing a large number of joists into the roadway. Forrest City Police Department officers had to direct traffic around the mess while it was cleaned up.

Chris Christie’s bridge-sized headache

Chris Christie speaks at a conference in Idaho in July 2011.

This lack of support was reflected in the response in many conservative quarters. “We like to judge politicians based on their policy positions, and that’s the main way they should be judged,” writes Paul Mirengoff on Power Line blog. “But policy positions change based on which way the wind is blowing and the nature of the office being sought. Temperament and personality don’t change so easily. And they also matter.” The National Review Online’s Jim Geraghty writes : If the allegations are true, the lane closures would represent a petty and obnoxious abuse of authority, one worrisome in a potential president. Some may erroneously insist this is a display of toughness or hard-nosed political power, but the form of the vindictiveness punished Fort Lee commuters of all political stripes, not just the mayor.

Despite the growing cases, mental health experts say help is just a call away. Police say Jesus Rodriguez was found with a gram of meth, and was also dealing with domestic problems when he shot an innocent man outside of Brackenridge on New Year’s Eve. It’s a situation mental health expert Iliana Gilman says may have been avoided if Rodriguez sought help. “You have to know where the resources are to get the help you need,” Gillman said, “but the fact of the matter is, the help is there.” In 2012, Austin Travis County Integral Care’s crisis services helped 78,000 callers. Despite recent efforts to improve mental health services for African Americans and other culturally diverse groups, barriers remain in access to and quality of care from, insurance coverage to culturally competent services. For those with insurance, coverage for mental health services and substance use disorders is substantially lower than coverage for other medical illnesses such as hypertension and diabetes. Obesity Blamed As Number Of Snorers Seeking Medical Help Soars By 31% In Five Years

Childhood obesity has its roots in faulty parenting

A worrying aspects of the trend is the rising number of children suffering the debilitating condition. Last year, youngsters had 3,556 hospital appointments related to sleep apnoea in contrast to 2,949 five years ago and 2,143 a decade ago. Marianne Davey, director at the British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association, said: Lifestyle factors are still the number one reason for snoring and as the nation becomes fatter, snoring and sleep apnoea will increase. Snoring can worsen into sleep apnoea, a more serious condition where patients have short periods when they cannot breathe I am not surprised that more snorers are coming forward to seek help. The reasons are mainly because the public are more aware that snoring can be treated and are also aware of the consequences of not being treated.

5 myths and misunderstandings about obesity

For most of us, obesity is not related to access to more nutritious foods, but rather to the choices we make in convenience stores and supermarkets where junk-food marketing dominates. Since we are buying more calories than we need, eating healthfully could be made more affordable by eliminating unnecessary cheaper low nutrient foods and substituting higher quality foods that may be slightly more expensive. Obesity is usually the consequence of eating too much junk food and consuming portions that are too large. People may head to the produce section of their grocery store with the best intentions, only to be confronted by candy at the cash register and chips and soda at the end of aisles. Approximately 30percent of supermarket sales are from such end-of-aisle locations. Food retailers impulse-marketing strategies contribute significantly to obesity across the population, not just for those who do not live near a green grocer or cant afford sometimes pricier healthy choices.

Five myths about obesity

One in every three children in the UAE is obese, according to the the United Nations Children Fund (Unicef), a situation that nutritionists believe has been caused by force-feeding, poor eating habits and a sedentary lifestyle. Greater exposure to technology like smartphones and video games also keeps children from spending time outdoors. Gulf News spoke to parents with children aged between three to eight. Eman Al Jabat, a Palestinian mother of two, said: I noticed that my daughter was overeating at a very young age, but everyone kept telling me that its OK, let her eat as she likes, she will lose the weight as she grows older. Emans daughter is now in the fifth grade, but is significantly bigger than the rest of her classmates; she also gets out of breath easily. She has to see a nutritionist every week. Amani Nedal, a Jordanian mother of two, on the other hand, has two underweight children. I know that my children eat what they need, so I do not force-feed them.

The Obesity Drug Industry Going Into 2014

Assessing the prospects of the obesity drug industry, I can conclude that the industry has time to grow into an extremely profitable industry and investors should not be discouraged by the initial setbacks. I believe 2014 is the year the obesity industry will break out and gain investor and consumer interest. The current estimates and analysts also remain optimistic as to the future of the industry, but it will take its time to get there, since a lot of effort is required to change the mindset of the people as well as to develop safer treatments and Belviq and Qsymia are definitely a step in the right direction. Additionally, the 30% penalty on obese employees is another factor, which will force the people to take up weight loss efforts, which will in turn boost the industry prospects. Acupuncture No Better Than ‘sham’ Version In Breast-cancer Drug Study

Bao’s team looked at hot flashes, sleep problems and other menopause-like symptoms as “secondary outcomes.” That’s another limitation, Ganz said, because the study was simply not set up to test those particular effects. Eleven of the 47 women, for example, had no hot flashes when they entered the study. Larger studies are still needed, said Bao. And they should also include a patient group that receives no acupuncture — to see whether the procedure is better than doing nothing. Still, Bao said that because acupuncture carries a low risk of side effects, women could give it a shot — even if any benefits come from a placebo effect.

To reach their findings, the investigators analyzed 47 breast cancer survivors who were taking aromatase inhibitors – a type of hormonal therapy for breast and ovarian cancer that blocks the production of estrogen in body tissues to prevent the cancer from coming back. Researchers say their study revealed that both real and sham acupuncture improved the side effects of anticancer drugs for breast cancer patients. All patients were suffering from stiffness and joint and muscle pain as a side effect of the therapy. Around 50% of the patients received eight weekly acupuncture treatments, while the remaining patients received sham acupuncture. The fake acupuncture involved the use of non-penetrating retractable needles that were placed in non-acupuncture points. All patients were required to keep a “hot flash” diary.

Smokers Likelier To Quit Under Strict Smoking Bans

Smoking banned at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee

Wael K. Al-Delaimy, MD, PhD, professor and chief of the Division of Global Health in the UC San Diego Department of Family and Preventive Medicine, said that when there’s a total smoking ban in the home, we found that smokers are more likely to reduce tobacco consumption and attempt to quit than when they’re allowed to smoke in some parts of the house. He said that the same held true when smokers report a total smoking ban in their city or town, asserting that having both home and city bans on smoking appears to be even more effective. Al-Delaimy said the findings underscore the public health importance of smoking bans inside and outside the home as a way to change smoking behaviors and reduce tobacco consumption at individual and societal levels. He said that California was the first state in the world to ban smoking in public places in 1994 and we are still finding the positive impact of that ban by changing the social norm and having more homes and cities banning smoking. Al-Delaimy and colleagues surveyed 1,718 current smokers identified as a representative sample of the adult population in California. They found that total home smoking bans were significantly associated with reduced consumption and successful quitting, but partial bans were not.

The citys Parks Department would enforce the ban, not police. Councilwoman Gale Brewer (D-Upper West Side) said there was lobbying behind the scenes to make sure the bill had enough support. She used the argument that secondhand smoke is affecting city children some of whom are diagnosed with asthma to make her case. We need this, Brewer said. This is the latest health push for the city, which in 2003 banned smoking in restaurants and bars.

Smith said additional research is needed to understand why. Depression and Mental Health Services Usage

“Mental illness is absolutely going off the charts on college campuses,” says Hara Marano, who prepared the report for a May newsletter published in association with Psychology Today. “College counseling centers used to be the backwaters of the mental health care system. Now they are the front line.” A March report in Psychiatric News from the American Psychiatric Association reported similar concerns. Psychiatrist Shamsah Sonawalla of Massachusetts General Hospital says “there is not just an increase in prevalence” of psychological problems in college students, but “an identification of problems earlier. That we recognize it more is a good thing. But we have opened up Pandora’s box.” Sonawalla found that 14% of 701 students who filled out a survey at a college in the Boston area showed significant depressive symptoms, and half of them could qualify as having major depression. The psychiatrist presented her research Tuesday to the APA.

Acupuncture as good as counseling for depression: study

I loved the sense of community we created in Boston and the diverse group of clients I was able to help from seniors to babies. I am thrilled to be back home in Hunterdon County and want to share my experience and knowledge to help residents of our community, states Nicole. Community acupuncture is an innovative clinic model that is growing across the country. Currently, there are over 200 community acupuncture clinics nationwide. The mission of community acupuncture is to make acupuncture and herbal medicine more affordable and accessible so that more people can benefit from this gentle medicine. Jersey Community Acupuncture is currently accepting new patients and has convenient morning, afternoon, evening and weekend hours.

However, any differences between acupuncture and counseling could have been due to chance, the researchers reported Tuesday in PLOS Medicine. They found doctors would need to treat seven people using acupuncture and 10 people with counseling for one person to no longer be depressed. “What this says is if you don’t get completely better, there are other options,” Dr. Philip Muskin, a psychiatrist at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, told Reuters Health. “One option would be to take a different medication, but by this study these would be valid options,” said Muskin, who was not involved with the new research. He cautioned, however, that counseling and acupuncture are not replacements for medication.

Ancient technique relieves symptoms for many of us

James Ochi, a San Diego pediatric ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon who has been in private practice for more than 20 years, conducted a study using acupuncture instead of codeine for pain relief for his tonsillectomy patients. The study was published in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology, a medical journal exclusively devoted to the subspecialty of pediatric otolaryngology. “Ive been using medical acupuncture for years to help my patients suffer less pain after surgery. Now that it is unsafe to use codeine for these kids, I wanted to see if acupuncture without the use of narcotics was helpful for my patients,” said Dr. Ochi. “Acupuncture in general has been shown to be effective in reducing pain, is safe and can be done quickly at minimal cost.” Dr. Ochi performed all tonsillectomies at Rady Childrens Hospital-San Diego and the acupuncture treatments at the El Centro Regional Medical Center Outpatient Clinic in El Centro, CA and his office in Encinitas, CA.

If youve ever had your feet fall asleep, its like that all the time. When you walk on them, its prickly. Spinal injections at West Michigan Pain helped quite a bit, but not enough, and eventually, a doctor there asked if LaSage, 56, would consider acupuncture. I laughed and said, Youve gotta be kidding me. Acupuncture applies needles, heat, pressure and other treatments to certain places on the skin to cause a change in the bodys physical functions. The use of needles in Chinese medicine goes back as far as the second century BC. In 1996, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the acupuncture needle as a medical device. In cancer treatment, its main use is to control symptoms, including pain, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, and nerve problems.

Study Finds Acupuncture Effective in Treating Pain after Tonsillectomy Surgery

The results, published last week in the peer-reviewed International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology show a reduction in pain for patients who underwent acupuncture after surgery. On a scale of 1 to 10, the patients reported a mean pain score of 5.52 before acupuncture and a score of 1.92 afterward. Though it does not appear to be the talk of the ear, nose and throat surgery world, it does appear that Ochis study is being taken seriously. Dr. Marilene Wang, a professor in the head and neck surgery department at UCLA, said it provides insight into the value of acupuncture in a clinical setting. Although the number of subjects in the study is small, the paper represents a promising pilot study regarding the use of acupuncture for pain management after ENT procedures, Wang wrote in an email. Wang noted that other studies have shown that acupuncture, which is not commonly used in the ear, nose and throat specialty, is of value.
